Sekolah Indonesia Cepat Tanggap (SICT) is a quick response post-disaster school design with a modular and plug & play system as its core. This initiative started in 2018 when a massive earthquake hit Lombok and 10 schools are built since then. Pictures in this post are particularly from schools located in Palu and Sigi, Central Sulawesi. Other locations include Lombok, Sumbawa, and Cianjur.

The construction only takes around 2–3 weeks to build from scratch, with consideration of locally available materials. SICT module’s dimensions are aligned to the building materials in pursuit of close-to-zero waste and less production time. The design also promotes an alternative way of learning in Indonesia’s education landscape. The composition of classes, transition spaces, corridors, tribunes, or other modules enhances the school activities by creating continuous indoor and outdoor learning spaces. We started each school by bringing a miniature to the community to ease the design discussion. They then participated in building the school, especially its identity, through murals and embedded playgrounds. In addition, the orientation of the openings is always designed to embrace the environment’s majestic scenery.
